Our Founding Story

A traumatic event initiated my metaphoric journey to amalgamate my leadership skills, design talents, and business acumen through design and architecture.

On June 11, 2009 while I was vacationing alone abroad, inebriated men with loaded weapons stormed my hotel.  I jumped three storeys out my hotel window onto concrete to escape gunfire.

My subsequent rehabilitation and healing in four very different hospitals led me to realize the importance of architecture and design in mental and physical health and informs many of my professional goals.  Perseverance through subsequent physical and mental health challenges – such as my visible and invisible disabilities – provides me with a unique understanding of human factors in design.

While volunteering within architecture during my degree, I realized that designing for health has copious opportunities for innovation, advocacy, and change.  At the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s national conference in Ottawa in 2017, I learned that there are approximately 84,000 chemicals used in conventional building materials in North America and less than 1% of those have been tested for counter interactivity.  Through observation, personal experience, and serving the City of Edmonton on the Edmonton Design Committee made me recognize that “accessible design” is often bare minimum and not as functional as it should be, nor is there a focus on how architecture influences health. Having a background in healthcare, this led me to champion these issues through my leadership roles and ultimately found Biotecture Inc. to affect change.
